A Look At Chapter Five
This chapter focuses on Gatsby and his crave for Daisy. Gatsby tries to do things for Nick so that Nick will agree with his plan to invite Daisy over for tea at his house. Gatsby prepares in ways such as inviting Nick to Coney Island, inviting him for a swim in the pool, and getting people to cut his lawn for him. He does all of this in hopes of pleasing Nick and getting him to agree on assisting him with his plan. Nick, however, gets slightly offended that Gatsby is trying to buy his consent for the meeting because he’s not the type of person to be bought. Nick does not take Gatsby up on any of his offers but does decide to call Daisy and invite her to his house in the end. When the day comes for Gatsby and Daisy to reunite at Nick’s house, Gatsby starts getting scared and doubting himself, since he hasn’t seen Daisy in 5 years. When Daisy arrives at Nick’s house, things get awkward between Gatsby and Daisy. Nick leaves the two alone in his house for half an hour and he then returns witnessing Daisy crying tears of joy and Gatsby ecstatic. Gatsby then invites both Nick and Daisy to his place where he shows off his luxurious lifestyle to the two. Nick starts wondering about Gatsby’s expectations for Daisy and believes that she will not be able to live up to them even though she’s very charming. However, the two seem to get more intimate with each other and Gatsby calls his piano player and he plays a popular song “Ain’t We Got Fun?”. Gatsby and Daisy seem to have forgotten that Nick is still with them and Nick decides to leave the house quickly in order to leave the two alone with each other.
